Guy Wilkinson’s initial ShopArt! presentation titled ‘Wormhole’, presented a forming of the real and the surreal to an unprepared audience. Seeking to Invade the viewer’s sensibility to create a detachment from reality exerting a hypnotic influence with a spirit of fun. However, due to the visual outcome of the installation and numerous other factors, Guy decided to remove the site specific installation ‘Wormhole’ and utilise the shop window space by hanging a recent painting.

The Untitled painting is apart of an evolving body of work that stems from the desire to understand and explore meaning and purpose in life. The body of work has been exhibited at various points in its development, such as Southampton Solent University’s degree show titled ‘Twenty Ten’ and Guy Wilkinson’s first solo exhibition at Wymondham Arts Centre titled ‘The Unknown Interface’.

I love making imagery experimenting, and celebrating what i see, you will often find me getting up in the middle of the night and running to jot an idea down! I have a have a big interest in costume, theatre, theatrical props, carnivals, burlesque, anything that involves dressing up, this has all been very influential in my work.

“I have been recently interested in developing notions of danger towards an audience and wish to explore this further. My work predominantly uses a found industrious material as well as an object that has lost purpose. Due to this my work is organic in the sense that I am not planned with what I will install in future exhibitions as I do not know what I will find. However for this opportunity I will re-vamp an older piece of work, seen as one of the images with the two halves of a barrel, one perspex and one rusted steel, which I plan to use with another component in a different arrangement, still unknown. This object will possibly represent danger but also be displayed as safe being behind a shop window, unable to be touched by many of the onlookers. The work will show a school-boy’s playful remembrance where ‘what if’ questions are asked, as well as experimenting with the dangerous unknowns.”

“I create images of hybrid flowers, using a mixture of found imagery, photographs, paintings etc. I cut the pcitures up and rearrange them into strange forms, and then
paint these images using watercolours. I am trying to take a traditional technique and bring it forward to a contemporary setting. My work is very much about aesthetics.
I create hybrid flowers that are open to interpretation to each individual viewer; they may not see it as a hybrid, but as an actual plant, or they might interpret the images
as a comment on genetic modification and the ever developing sciences. I like the discussion that my images tend to generate.”

Jenny’s ShopArt! paintings are part of a series made after a recent road trip in California and Arizona through the Mojave Desert, inspired by the desolate and abandoned places left to rot in the landscape.

“I like to travel to find places like these as they remind me of what the Earth will eventually look like without us here. They are the lands shipwrecks and remain to this day unused and boarded up standing beside the busy road to Las Vegas.”

These paintings are all currently for sale (£250 each for the two smaller ones and £450 for the larger one) please enquire by email or telephone, see website:

“My interest is in our relationship to objects and the objects that we choose to keep and collect. How an object, often an everyday object, can be a highly treasured possession to one individual and worthless to another. How the narratives and mysteries that become entwined within objects affect and alter them and our perceptions of them. Recent work has centred on our family button box which has been passed down through four generations – why?. Small irrelevant objects that were once saved for their perceived usefulness have become a collection of memories, stories and mysteries. I am keenly interested in the environment and look to using materials that ‘already are’, manipulating them into something else. Everyday insignificant items can provide valuable source materials, e.g. office paper, envelopes and paper clips have featured in my work. Inspiration frequently comes from my fascination with the tactility of an object and probably as a result, much of my work is very tactile.”
